Mrs. Herndon, born July 9, 1927, was a lifelong resident of Aiken, and was the daughter of late Parker and Lillian Hisel. She was graduated from Aiken High School in 1944 and began her working career as a switchboard operator at Clearwater Finishing Plant. She also worked as a secretary for the pastor at First Baptist Church. Soon after that, Mootzie was a homemaker and helped her husband with the family business, Herndon Furniture Company. Mrs. Herndon was an expert gardener, a member of the Suburban Garden Club, and arranged the flowers for various civic organizations. She, along with her husband, always had a picturesque seasonally-planted yard. Mootzie loved living in Aiken not only for her love of flowers, but also because she could enjoy the many horse events of Aiken. She was active in various First Baptist Church Committees, as well as her Sunday school class. She enjoyed spectator sports of all kinds, but especially enjoyed watching the Georgia Bulldogs and the Atlanta Braves. Her greatest pleasure in sports was watching her grandsons as they competed in their baseball games, basketball games, or soccer matches. She is survived by her loving husband, Willis Herndon, and her daughter, Lynn H. Sampson, son-in-law Pete Sampson, grandsons Scott Sampson and Alan Sampson, and sister-in-law, Betty H. Wier and her husband, Emmett Wier. Active pallbearers will be Aaron Hicks, Brad Hicks, Joey Hicks, Traye Jackson, Al Beasley and Pat Cunning. Honorary pallbearers will be Billy Jackson, Mackie Scott, Jr., Bill Beasley, Malcolm Dailey, Fielding Foreman, Bobby Knight, Charles Hatcher, Bill Cone, Harry Brady, Bobby Cook, Lee Poe and Jimmy Bell.
