AIKEN, SC -- WILLIAM A. SHAVER, M.D., 86, of Aiken, SC, beloved husband of V. Anne Shaver, died Saturday, March 5, 2011 at Aiken Regional Medical Centers.
A native of St. Marys, PA, Dr. Shaver was a son of the late William Patrick and Carrie Friedline Shaver. He joined the U. S. Navy in 1942 and then the Naval Reserves rising to the rank of Lieutenant Commander before his retirement in 1966. He was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
From 1957 to 1966 Dr. Shaver lived in Miami, FL and was attending physician at Baptist, Doctors, Variety Children's, Jackson Memorial, Cedars of Lebanon and Mercy Hospitals and was a consultant in surgery for the Miami V.A. Hospital. During those years he also was a clinical professor of surgery at the University of Miami. Dr. Shaver then moved to Lebanon, PA where he was attending staff and Chief of Surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital and was on the attending staff of Lebanon Valley General Hospital from 1966 to 1984. He also served from 1966 to 1973 as clinical professor of surgery at the University of Pennsylvania, and assistant professor of surgery at Penn State University and University Medical School in Hershey, PA. Then from 1984 to 1995 Dr. Shaver served as associate director of surgical education at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, VA and associate professor at the University of Virginia. After his retirement while living on Amelia Island, Dr. Shaver volunteered his time teaching residents at the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, FL.
Survivors, in addition to his wife Anne, include his children; Leslie A. Davis, Aiken, SC, Robert D. Shaver, M.D. (Adrienne), Lebanon, PA, Mark Shaver (Leah), Philadelphia, PA, Michael Shaver, Thomas Jeffcoat (Lori), Bristol, TN, Beth Jeffcoat, Kissimmee, FL, Paige Eaton (Terry), Roanoke, VA and Khristin Puckett (Walter), Ft. Bliss, TX, his grandchildren; Ashley and Jocelyn Martin, Davis, Cassie and Haley Shaver, Page and Addie Heeter, Neve Shaver, Sydney, Savannah and Shelby Jeffcoat, Heath and Luke Rinkus, Travis and Bryce Eaton, Joshua, Justin, Sam and Clay Puckett, sisters-in-law; Betty Morton and Barbara Shaver and his aunts; Imogene Fortner and Edna Ruth Horne (H. H.). Dr. Shaver was preceded in death by a son, William Paul Shaver, a brother, Bob and a sister, Bette.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 1:00 PM in the chapel of St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church. Honorary Pallbearers will be Dr. James Shaver, Dr. Jose Jiminez, Dr. Steve Winer, Dr. Bob Irvin, Dr. Loy Awkerman, Rody Broome, Bill Bailey, Noel Evans, Jim Brubaker, Bob Isler, Mike Deeb and Hank Ford.
