AIKEN, SC -- Laura Bowling Mitchell, 89, went to be with her Lord Tuesday, April 26, 2006.
She entered into rest at her residence after a long battle with cancer.
A native of Fayette County, West Virginia Laura was the daughter of the late Reverend William and Tobitha Bowling. She grew up in Monroe County, West Virginia and married her beloved husband of 40 years Oliver Sheldon Mitchell in 1942. In 1952 they moved to Aiken, SC where she worked for DuPont, Woodruff Drug, Edwards, and Stepping Stones during residency of her 59 years. She has been an active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in New Ellenton since 1953 and found great joy serving the people of her church. Laura loved and cared for her family and friends with unsurpassed dedication during times of sickness as well as health. She was a devoted, mother, sister, aunt, Nana, great grandmother, and friend. Laura was a fun loving soul and a master storyteller. Her greatest joys were being with her family, cooking, taking care of children, caring for the sick or elderly and traveling. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Survivors left to honor her memory are, one daughter, Toby M. (David) James, of Aiken, SC, one sister, Jo Gravely, one sister-in-law, Emma Mitchell Shuller, 5 grand children, Shelly Laura James, Patricia Perkins Bihl, Holly Perkins O’Donnell, Olin Mitchell Perkins ,and Douglas Perkins, 7 great grand children, 12 nephews, 12 nieces, and 20 great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, their daughter Scherry Mitchell Perkins, 3 brothers, 5 sisters and 1 nephew.
Pallbearers will be Johnny Morris, Jimmy Brinkley, Doug Summer, Randall Stowe, Joe Eubanks, Bill Parchen.
Honorary Pallbearers will be the members of the Joy Circle UMW.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday at 11:00 AM in the sanctuary of St. Paul United Methodist Church, New Ellenton, SC with the church Pastor Rev. Shannon Tresco and previous Pastor Rev. Bryan Gilmer officiating. The family will receive friends in the Family Life Center following the Service.
Interment will be held at Carmel Cemetery in the beautiful mountains of Gap Mills, West Virginia, the land that she so loved.
