AIKEN, SC - Philip Dew England passed on Sunday, May 8, 2011. His light will be missed by his family and many friends with whom he shared his journey.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 12, 2011 at 10:30 AM in the Shellhouse Funeral Home Chapel, Hayne Ave.
Phil was born at Emory University Hospital, Wesley Memorial, Atlanta, Georgia on the 18th of December, 1939 to Robert Durant England III and Jean Caroline McClung. The family, which included an older brother, Kevin Donleavy, affectionately known as “Peach”, lived at 106 Lucerne Street. Phil attended public schools in Decatur; received a B.A. in Psychology from Duke University and a Masters in Planning from Clemson University. He served as the Town Administrator and Planning Director for Pendleton, South Carolina before accepting the position of Director of Planning and Development for Aiken County in 1983. He served as the Director of Planning for 25 years before retiring in 2008.
Phil lived with his wife Jo, his English Springer Spaniel, Katie, cats Beau and Simon, and occasionally three grandchildren. In his leisure time he enjoyed sailing and fishing with his Rogue friends, working with stained glass, building tree houses and dinosaurs, or simply walking in his woods.
Phil is survived by his wife Jo Ann Price England; daughter, Nicole Price Terral (Donald Lee Terral) of Charlotte, North Carolina; his brother, Kevin Donleavy of Charlottesville, Virginia; and three grandchildren, Keirstin Elizabeth Katharine Price Terral, Corey George Philip Terral, and Christian Joseph Terral.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Cumbee Center to Assist Abused Persons (CAAP) at P.O. 1293, Aiken, South Carolina, 29841.
