AIKEN, SC-Mr. Frampton Wyman Toole, Jr., died on Sunday, July 10, 2011. He was born on September 18, 1923, to Frampton Wyman Toole, Sr., and Lillian Jones Toole. He was a native and lifelong resident of Aiken. He is survived by his wife, Betty McLure Toole, his son, Frampton Wyman Toole, III, both of Aiken, SC, his daughter, Harriet Celeste Toole, of Atlanta, GA, his grandson, Frampton Wyman Toole, IV, of Aiken, SC, one brother, Gasper Loren Toole, III, of Aiken, SC, and three sisters, Margery Toole Smoak and Sara Toole Beeland, both of Aiken, SC, and Eleanor Toole Going of Columbia, SC. He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers, Abner Perrin Toole and Frank Pickens Toole, and two sisters, Betty Toole Symonds and Lillian Winifred Toole. He attended the Aiken Institute and graduated from Aiken High School. During those years, he attained the rank of Eagle Scout. Upon graduation from high school, he attended the University of South Carolina and in 1943 obtained an A.B. degree with a major in English and a minor in Naval Science. He immediately entered the United States Navy as a commissioned Ensign. During World War II, he served primarily in the Pacific Theater and eventually rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. After completion of his Navy service, he entered Harvard Law School and in 1949 obtained a J.D. degree. Upon his return to Aiken, he joined the law firm of Toole and Toole, Attorneys, practicing alongside his father and surviving brother. As an attorney, he was a member of the Aiken County Bar and the South Carolina Bar. As a civic leader, he served the Aiken community and the State of South Carolina for decades. In 1952, he was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives where he served for four years. He occupied this role again from 1962 through 1966. He was also the City of Aiken Solicitor from 1960 through 1962. In 1966, he was elected to the South Carolina Senate and served for two years. Following his departure from the Senate, he was elected to serve on the University of South Carolina Board of Trustees. His service as a Trustee was for eleven years and included membership on the Executive Committee. He was honored with the title of Trustee Emeritus when he retired from the board. In addition to his statewide leadership, he was also active in leadership in the local community. He was a past President of the Aiken Chamber of Commerce and the Aiken Rotary Club and was an active member of many other civic organizations. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Aiken where he served as a Deacon and as a Trustee. He was also a member of the Aiken Businessmen’s Club and the Aiken Outing Club and was a past member of American Legion Post No.77 and the Silverton Agricultural Club. A private graveside service will be held on Wednesday, July 13, 2011, at historic Bethany Cemetery in Aiken. A reception for family, friends, colleagues, and those who knew him will be held at Newberry Hall from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 13, 2011. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Chancellor’s Discretionary Fund at USC-Aiken or to a charity of choice.
