Van C. Haynes

AIKEN - Mr. Van Carlisle Haynes, 88, died Wednesday, July 20, 2011. The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 AM Saturday, with funeral services to follow at 11:00 AM in the Shellhouse Funeral Home Chapel, Hayne Ave. The Reverend Dr. Rodney K. Powell will officiate. Interment with full military honors will follow in Aiken Memorial Gardens. Mr. Haynes was born in Canton, NC, a son of the late John Carlisle and Kate Laura Smathers Haynes. He had been a resident of Aiken for over 56 years, and was a maintenance supervisor for EI DuPont at SRP. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and American Legion Post 26, as well as the DAV. Mr. Hanes joined the Army Air Corp on January 16, 1942 and served in China, Burma and India during WWII. He then joined the US Army Reserves and served until retirement on August 31, 1982, with almost 35 years total service and the rank of Sergeant Major. He received the following medals: Meritorius Service Medal with Oak Leaf cluster, Army Commendation medal, American Theater Campaign Medal with three bronze service stars, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign medal, WWII Victory medal, Good Conduct medal, American Defense medal, Reserve Service medal with hour glass device, Army Reserve Achievement medal with three stars, and the China Memorial medal (from Nationalist China). He is survived by his beloved wife, Betty Snyder Haynes; a daughter, Terri Lynn Haynes, New Ellenton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jerry C. Haynes.
