AIKEN - Mr. Daniel Jean Pellarin, age 83, of Aiken, SC, beloved husband of Phyllis Gillespie Pellarin, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, August 21, 2011. He was the son of the late Angelo and Marie Desnos Pellarin and brother of the late Louis E. Pellarin.
In addition to his wife of 63 years, Dan, known to most of his friends and family as "Albie," is survived by his daughters, Jan Pellarin Riesche and her husband Jack of Indianapolis, IN; Jill Pellarin and her partner Harvey Yazijian of Wayland, MA; Judy Pellarin and her husband Andy Stern of Greensboro, NC; his son Daniel Jean Pellarin Jr. and his wife Sally of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren Lisa Panik, Brion Pellarin, Soren and Mara Gabrielsen, Erin and Kelsey Pellarin, Tyler and Wyatt Pellarin; three great grandchildren, Allison, Megan, and Caitlin Panik; and his beloved dog, Holly.
Dan was born in New York City on December 11, 1927, and grew up in New Hampton, NY. He attended Goshen High School in NY and graduated from Lafayette College in Easton, PA. He received his masters degree from the University of South Carolina.
A WWII veteran, Dan served in the Army of Occupation in Tokyo, Japan. He spent his entire professional life of 35 years as a nuclear physicist at Argonne National Laboratory and the Savannah River Plant. Dan was a member of the Material Research Society and the National American Nuclear Society, where he was a member of the Special Publications Committee. In addition, Dan was a lecturer at the University of South Carolina, Aiken campus, where he taught in the math and engineering departments. Dan was a member of the Fifty Plus Club for 25 years and volunteered his time in several capacities at the Aiken Area Council on Aging.
In retirement, Dan and Phyllis traveled the world extensively, visiting 85 countries, fulfilling a lifelong dream. Dan fed his love for history with his avid reading and stamp collecting. He loved being "Grumps" to all of his grandchildren and sharing the joys of their childhood and stories from his own. A handyman extraordinaire, he enjoyed fixing things for his family, as well as for his friends and neighbors.
