AIKEN, SC -- Clara Fredericks, 91, of Cutchogue, New York
Clara Fredericks, 91, of Cutchogue, NY, died Monday, July 9, 2007 at her daughter’s residence in Aiken, SC. She was born in Brooklyn, New York on January 29, 1916. She lived in Springfield Gardens, Queens from 1951-1978 when she and her husband retired to Cutchogue, New York. She was predeceased in death by her parents Mary Kempf Forstner and Carl Frederick Forstner. She is survived by her loving husband Theodore A. Fredericks to whom she was married for 67 years. She is also survived by her loving daughter Dr. Carol Jantzen and her son-in-law Dr. John Pickett of Aiken and daughter Margaret Pickett O’Neill and her family of Atlanta, GA.
Clara grew up in Brooklyn, NY where she graduated from Public School 162 in 1930. She worked for Sinclair Oil Company in Manhattan during the 1930’s to 1940’s as a comptometer operator (comptometers were the manual forerunners of rapid computer software for performing large database calculations). She went on to work for Western Electric Corporation in Springfield Gardens, Queens both as a comptometer operator and as a cashier for a period of 20 years. Even though she worked full time at Western Electric she went to night school and earned her High School Equivalency Diploma in 1964. After retirement she and her husband, a mineralogist, founded the Long Island Mineral and Geological Society (LIMAGS).
She will be missed by her family, her friends from New York and members of LIMAGS, her Aiken caregiver Mary Arthur Packer, and her newer friends in Aiken such as Frieda Unverzagt.
The family will receive friends at Shellhouse Funeral Home, Hayne Ave., Aiken, from 1 PM to 2 PM, on Saturday July 14, 2007. The Rev. John Arthur of the Eureka First Baptist Church in Eureka, SC will preside over a funeral service immediately following the visitation at 2 PM. Burial will be private.
