Joe Edwin Bumpus

Aiken, SC - Joe Edwin Bumpus, 85, died October 25,2011 after a long illness. He is survived by his loving wife, Peggy James Bumpus, to whom he was happily married for 59 years. Other survivors include a daughter, Lisa (Denny) Lyell of Goreville, Il. A son, Kevin J (Tina) Bumpus, of Aiken, SC. He is also survived by four grandsons, Seth Shepherd and Dylan Lyell of Goreville, Il, Wesley and Adam Bumpus of Aiken, SC, and three step grandchildren Lee Lyell of Goreville, Il, Megon and Jason Lyell, of Christopher, Il. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by seven brothers and two sisters. Mr. Bumpus was a native of Waverly, Tennessee, a son of the late Ernest and Kate Bumpus. He attended Austin Peay College, and graduated from The University of Tennessee. He proudly served his country in the US Navy during World War II. He retired from DuPont and Westinghouse after 38 years of service. He was a longtime faithful member of St. John’s United Methodist church. He was a charter member of the Fellowship Sunday School class, he enjoyed singing in the Men’s praise choir, and served on several church committees. After retirement, he enjoyed traveling to several countries with his wife. He delivered Meals on Wheels and volunteered at Aiken Regional Hospital in his spare time. His greatest enjoyment was spending time with his grandchildren, and he was an avid Vols fan. A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 PM Friday at St. John’s United Methodist Church with the Reverends Dr. George K .Howle and Keith Stewart officiating. The family will then receive friends in Ward Hall. Interment with military honors will follow in Aiken Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Seth Shepherd, Dylan Lyell, Wesley Bumpus, Adam Bumpus, Jason B. Long and Claude Goodlett. Honorary Pallbearers will be The St. John’s UMC Fellowship Sunday School Class. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Jack Meeks Ramp Ministry at St. John’s UMC, 104 Newberry St, Aiken, SC 29801.
