Dorothy Barfield Ashmore, formerly of Aiken, SC, having moved to Jacksonville, FL in 2003, passed away on November 10, 2011 after a long illness. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert Evans Ashmore in 2000. She was born in Georgia, grew up in Atlanta and attended schools there. She worked as a “Legal Secretary” for leading law firms in Atlanta and Greenwich, Connecticut. Dorothy was Welcome Wagon Representative in Aiken, SC for over sixteen years and welcomed thousands of new families to that area. Mrs. Ashmore received many awards for her personal service in this program. She served as a volunteer for the Aiken Hospital Welcome Baby program, also served as a volunteer for United Way of Aiken. Dorothy was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Aiken. Survivors are two daughters, Carole Ann Martin (RP) of Powder Springs, GA and Elizabeth Jean Veltri, Jacksonville, FL, four grandchildren, Teresa Ann Culclasure (Dr. Talley), Macon, GA, Gregory Lee Martin (Heidi), Kennesaw, GA, Christopher Robert Veltri, Jacksonville, FL, Katie Jean Veltri, Tampa, FL, three great grandchildren, Alexa Christine Culclasure, Emmie Rebecca Culclasure, and Jacob Talley Culclasure, all of Macon, GA. Dorothy loved her family, had many friends and always had a warm smile for everyone she met. Her favorite pastime was the game of Bridge. She belonged to several bridge clubs in Aiken when a resident and also in Jacksonville, FL. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, November 15, 2011 in the Shellhouse Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Martha Ebel officiating. Interment will follow in Magnolia Cemetery, Augusta. A memorial service will be held in Jacksonville, FL at a later date. Memorials in her name may be directed to the charity of your choice.
