Dennis Arthur Barton

Montmorenci - Mr. Dennis Arthur Barton, 89, died Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at the home of his daughter in Montmorenci, SC. Mr. Barton was born November 19, 1921 in St. Matthews, SC, a son of the late Earl Rushton Barton, Sr. and Daisy Mable Ayers Barton. The family moved to Augusta in 1924 where he spent his youth. Dennis delivered groceries and then telegrams during the depression; later he worked with his father and older brothers as a carpenter, before moving to Charleston with his bride, the late Dorothy Alice Carter Barton. He retired from the Atlantic Coastline Railroad as a fireman, and came to live in Aiken a few years ago. One of nine children and the father of six, Dennis valued family and worked tirelessly to nurture his. A lover of mathematics, he spent many hours teaching his great grands magic squares and chess. His light shone on all he loved. The last of his siblings, he is survived by three daughters, Jo Ann Barton England (the late Philip), Aiken, Helen Irene Barton, San Jacinto, CA, Sue Ellen Barton Cox (Wayne), Conover, NC; one son, John Paul Barton (Tina), Morongo Valley, CA; 13 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; his special friend, Mayard King, Aiken. He is predeceased by one daughter, Linda Alice Barton Hoffman, and one son, Douglas Arthur Barton. Funeral services will be private.
