Walter Riddick

AIKEN - Mr. Walter Eure Riddick, Sr., died on January 4, 2011 at his residence at the age of 85. Funeral services will be held at St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church on Sunday, January 8, 2:00 p.m. The Reverends Grant Wiseman and Joseph Whitehurst will perform the burial service. Interment will be in St Thaddeus Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Stevenson McClelland building immediately following the interment. Walter Riddick was born in Hamlet, N.C., to the late John G. Riddick and Connie Moss Riddick. He grew up in Greenwood, S.C., where he lettered in four different sports for the Greenwood Emeralds. After high school he attended Presbyterian College in 1943 for one year. He played on the Presbyterian College football team that was the last one to beat Clemson. He then served in World War II in Europe with The 101 St. Airborne Division. After the War he returned to finish his education at the Citadel with the class of 1951. He moved to Aiken in 1953 and worked as an Accountant for E.I. Dupont until retiring in 1986. He was a member of St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church where at one time he was a member of the Vestry, served on the Maintenance Committee, coached basketball and also served on the Usher Committee. He also coached Little League Baseball for several years, and was active in the Boy Scout program. He is survived by his beloved wife Joyce Rhodes Riddick. Three sons Walter E. Riddick, Jr., (Roseanne) of Staten Island, N.Y., Allen Riddick (Stacey) of Aiken and Robert Riddick (Cheryl) of Lexington and five grandchildren. They are Ian and Ethan Riddick of New York, Michael Riddick of Del Rio, TX., Kelley Riddick of Myrtle Beach, and Adam Riddick of Lexington. Walter is preceded in death by his parents and seven siblings. They siblings were Mary R. Park, Connie Riddick, Eleanor R. Walker, Albert Riddick- all of Greenwood; Ann R. Lewis, John Riddick, and Patrick Riddick-all from Columbia. Honorary Pallbearers will be nephews, Joe Park, John. Park, Michael Park, Hank Riddick, John Riddick, and David Walker. In lieu of flowers Memorials can be made to St. Thaddeus Church, 125 Pendleton St., Aiken, SC 29801, and the Multiple Sclerosis Society- Mid Atlantic Chapter, Box 36405, Charlotte, NC, 28236.
