AIKEN - Mr. Bill- William H. McAuliffe, 97, entered into rest Monday, January 9, 2012 in Aiken, South Carolina.
He was preceded in death by Katherine, his wife of 66 years; his mother, father, brother John McAuliffe and sister, Mary Saltzman. He is survived by his brother's children John McAuliffe and Nancy Miller of Cleveland, Ohio and sister's son Tim Saltzman of Miami, Florida.
Bill, following Army induction in 1941, progressed through the non com ranks of the Army combat engineers to officer at Fort Belvoir, Virginia to honorable discharge in 1946. The last two years as a first lieutenant officer involved negotiating settlement of many cancelled engineer contracts for the fifth corps Army with payments of many millions of dollars. Re-entering civilian life he was employed in responsible executive positions with three major corporations involving product acquisitions, product development, manufacturing, distribution, and marketing throughout America, Europe and the Far East that entailed extensive travel.
Bill retired in 1979 from the AO Smith Corporation in Chicago, moved to Aiken, and built a home on the Houndslake Country Club golf course where Bill and his wife, Kay, enjoyed playing golf and social activities with the many new friends in this wonderful community. Bill's golfing activities included the formation of the Aiken CSRA Seniors Golf Association with three other men many years ago and now is an honorary member. Bill was quite active throughout the city with new friends and was known as "Mr. Bill".
As an honorably discharged First Lieutenant Veteran he will be interred with his wife Katherine at the Beaufort National Cemetery, Beaufort, South Carolina.
A Funeral Mass for Mr. William McAuliffe will be held on February 23, 2012 at 3:00 PM at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church. Family will receive guests at Houndslake Country Club immediately following the service. Interment will be held later in Beaufort National Cemetery.
