AIKEN, SC – Mr. Mark W. DeTroye, 65, passed peacefully to the Lord, January 21st, 2012 surrounded by family and friends in his Aiken home. He courageously fought a battle against cancer for more than a year.
Mark was born on February 6, 1946 in Madison, WI, son of the late Eugene & Norma (Seehaver) DeTroye. He graduated from Plymouth High School in 1964. Mark was a Naval Vietnam Veteran 1965 – 1969, having served on the USS Ticonderoga. On September 14, 1968 Mark married Joan Moehr in Cascade, WI. They were blessed with two sons, Tim DeTroye, Aiken, SC; and Erik DeTroye, Sheboygan, WI.
As his sons were growing up, he was very active as a Boy Scout Troop Master, including making several canoe camping trips down the Wisconsin River as well as to the Boundary Waters of northern Minnesota & Canada. He loved the outdoors. He was also President of the local chapter of AFS, and the family hosted an exchange student, Fede Ferrari, from Argentina, whom to this day remains in contact with the family.
During his business career, Mark served on the board of the Tesseract User Group (TUG). He became vice-president and then president of the organization. Mark was employed for over 30 years in the Human Resources Department at Kohler Corporate Headquarters, in Kohler, WI. During this time, he went to school at night to pursue his dream of completing his Bachelor Degree in Business Administration from Cardinal Stritch College in Milwaukee, WI. He moved to Minneapolis, MN in 2000 where he worked in Target’s corporate offices. In 2004 he and Joan relocated to Aiken, SC where he was employed by MAU, in Augusta, GA.
Mark was a loving husband, father and grandfather. His favorite activity was spending time with his family. He also loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, golf, hunting, and camping. He could often be found on the shores of Lake Michigan or on the lakes in the Kettle Moraine region slinging a fishing line in the water. Many a meal was enjoyed with Mark’s expertise in outdoor grilling. He was always a generous person, willing to lend a helping hand to others. He spent some time in Aiken working on homes for Habitat for Humanity. Friends remember Mark as having a jovial laugh that would put a smile on anyone’s face. Mark was an avid Green Bay Packers fan. He was an active member of Cedar Creek Church.
Mark is survived by his wife Joan (Moehr) DeTroye; son, Tim DeTroye, Aiken, SC; son, Erik DeTroye, Sheboygan, WI; two granddaughters: Dani & Mia DeTroye, Aiken, SC ; sister, Lyndell Johnson of Cascade, WI; niece Shannon Losing of Milwaukee, WI; nephew Shane Losing of TX and many other cherished extended family and friends.
Visitation will be Wednesday, January 25, 2012 from 6 to 8 PM at Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home on East Pine Log Rd.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, January 26, 2012 at Cedar Creek Church in the Youth Worship Center, 3001 Banks Mill Road, Aiken, SC.
