AIKEN – Dr. Thomas Scott Truitt, DMD, Ret Col., 62, the loving husband of Lana Truitt, died Monday, March 19, 2012.
Born in Rochester, IN, Dr. Truitt was the son of Gregory and Dorothy Ley Truitt. He was a veteran of the United States Army Reserves and retired with the rank of Colonel. Dr. Truitt was a member of many organizations including the Sertoma Club, American Dental Association, SC Dental Association, Aiken County Dental Association, Cowden Plantation Hunting Club, River Ridge Hunting Club, Nobudua Hunting Club, Olde Town Hunting Club, Cypress Bay Hunting Club, Creek & Belfast Hunting Club and Houndslake Country Club. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame and the MUSC Dental School. Dr. Truitt was a member of St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church in Aiken.
Survivors include his wife, Lana Jo Waggoner Truitt; a daughter, Courtney Truitt (J.C.) Nicholson, Columbia, SC, a son, Samuel Scott (Erin Booth) Truitt, Aiken; his mother, Dorothy Ley Truitt (Clint) Dyer, Midland Valley; two sisters Julia Truitt (Ulysses) Del Rosario, Brandon, FL., and P.J. Truitt (Jack) Mong of Louisville, KY.
Dr. Truitt was preceded in death by his father Gregory Scott Truitt.
Tom was surrounded by his family and close friends at the time of his passing following a 13 year battle with prostate cancer. He and his wife Lana built a dental practice for over 35 years and treated their patients like family. He loved his work and brought smiles to thousands of patients. He loved spending time on the lake with his family and cherished time hunting with his son, son-in-law, and countless hunting buddies. He will be missed by all but never forgotten.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church with Father Gregory Wilson officiating. Interment with full military honors will be held in Beaufort National Cemetery on Friday at 1:00 PM.
Pallbearers will be Mike Green, Dr. John Tucker, Jr., Donnie Hooks, Dr. Gil Royal, William E. Guy, Charles O' Warner, Rhett Sinclair, and William Hartford.
Honorary Pallbearers will be the Aiken County Dental Society.
