AIKEN, SC -- Courtney Bruce Weidenbacker, 93, of Aiken, passed away with his wife and daughter at his side Friday, March 30 at Aiken Regional Hospital after a brief illness.
Bruce was born in Philadelphia but spent most of his youth in Argentina. He attended Stanton Military Academy, the University of Virginia and the Georgetown School of Foreign Service.
Due to his being bi-lingual he was recruited as a young man to work for several years for the Vanadium Mining Corporation and was stationed in the Andes. He then began a long career with various Exxon affiliates which included over 16 years in Perú and Colombia. On returning to the states, he worked for Esso Eastern in New York and Houston, spending several months each year in the Far East.
Bruce was an avid reader, golfer, and bridge player. He was a sailor and owned a number of boats in his lifetime.
In 2004 he and his wife moved to Aiken where he was a member of the Reserve Club.
His first wife predeceased him. In 1985 he married and is survived by his wife Jane, his daughter Diana Weidenbacker of Durham, NH, and his brother Robert Weidenbacker of Michigan.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his name to the University of New Hampshire Sailing Team, c/o Brian Scott, Campus Recreation, 128 Main Street, Durham, NH 03824, or to a charity of your choice.
