AIKEN - Mrs. Ursula P. Beard, 80, died peacefully at her home on Monday, April 9, 2012.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. John Clyde Beard, Jr.; father and mother, Hans and Frieda Paulig; sister, Rosemarie Hassel and brothers Hans and Frank Paulig.
She is survived by her sister Maria Shaw, Hoover, AL, and brother, Klaus Paulig, Dusseldorf, Germany.
Ursula was born in Dresden, Germany in 1931. She and her family survived the bombing of Dresden at the conclusion of WWII and fled to West Berlin. She emigrated to the United States from Wiesbaden, Germany in 1962 where she was a co-owner of a successful antique business. She resided in Philadelphia where she met and married her late husband. They moved to Aiken in 1966 when he joined the medical staff of the DuPont Chemical Company at the Savannah River Site. She and her late husband were members of Saint Thaddeus Episcopal Church. She was a member of the Aiken Assembly and active in the Aiken County Medical Society and a patron of USC Aiken cultural series. She and her late husband loved the opera and made frequent trips to New York. Ursula is remembered for her elegant and aristocratic dress and bearing.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 - 3:00 PM Thursday at Shellhouse Funeral Home, Hayne Ave., followed by a 3:30 PM graveside service in the St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church Cemetery. The Reverend Grant Wiseman will officiate.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church, 125 Pendleton St. SW, Aiken, SC 29801, or a charity of choice.
