AIKEN - Mr. James Willis Hammond, 93, died Monday, April 30, 2012.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday in the Shellhouse Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Dr. Fred W. Andrea III officiating. Interment with military honors and Masonic Rites will follow in Bethany Cemetery. The family will receive friends beginning at 12:00 PM until the time of the service.
Mr. Hammond was born in Laurens, SC, a son of the late James Perry Reilly Hammond and Ola Putnam Hammond. He served in the US Army during WWII, was a safety engineer at the Savannah River Plant, a member of the Laurens Masonic Lodge, and a member of First Baptist Church. He was one of the first S.C. Highway Patrol officers, and was the former owner of Hammond Safety Academy where he taught drivers education to many young and old people.
He is survived by his son, Reverend Dr. Reilly (Julie) Hammond, Aiken; three grandchildren, Valerie Hammond, J.P. Hammond and Justin Brentnell.
Mr. Hammond was preceded in death by his wife, Ida Hammond, on March 25, 2012
