AIKEN - Mr. Hugh Herbert Alexander, Jr., 87, died Thursday, May 3, 2012. A graveside funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM Monday in Historic Bethany Cemetery followed by military honors. Reverend Charles Jenkins will officiate. Honorary pallbearers will be Patrick Dorr, Andrew Dorr, Jeff Rose, Ryan Murphree, Kenneth Alexander, Jr., Jon Simmons, Jimmy Davis, Larry Young, Wallace Fortson, John Epps, Strom Thurmond, Jr. and Mike Farmer. Mr. Alexander was born in Fortsonia, GA, a son of the late Hugh H. and Lula Frances Davis Alexander. He was a lifelong resident of Aiken, and worked in health protection for EI DuPont at the Savannah River Plant. He had served in the US Navy during WWII, on the USS New Mexico and was a deacon at Memorial Baptist Church, Aiken. He was a member of Montmorenci Hunting Club. He loved to hunt, fish, and especially enjoyed planting his garden and sharing with others. He loved his family and just being around people. On his 83rd birthday, Mr. Alexander was quoted as saying, "I would like my children to remember: to attend their church fellowship, faithfully read their Bible every day, and above all, always stay close to God, their heavenly father..." He is survived by his beloved wife, Marjorie Davis Alexander; a daughter, Kay A. (Don) Murphree, North Augusta; a son, Ken (Donna) Alexander, North Augusta; five grandchildren, Kenneth Alexander, Jr., Sharon Denise Rose, Melissa Simmons, Sonya Rhymann, Ryan L. Murphree; great grandchildren, Brooke Alexander, Tyler Holshouser, Preston Simmons, Arden Simmons; sister, Julia Purdy, Abbeville, SC. Memorials may be directed to Memorial Baptist Church, 3100 Vaucluse Rd., Aiken, SC 29801, the Aiken Heart Association, 1003 Hammond Rd., Aiken, SC 29803, or the Savannah River Cancer Foundation, P.O.
