AIKEN, SC – MRS. ELMA SANDERS CARNES, 84. beloved wife of Jerry A. Carnes, died Friday, September 21, 2007 at her residence.
A native of Bamberg, SC, Mrs. Carns was a daughter of the late William Rufus and Rosa Bryant Sanders. She was a member of Talatha Baptist Church and the Friendship Sunday School Class and a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. She retired from Southern Bell and AT&T after more than 30 years service.
Elma was an avid fisherwoman and a happy camper. She lived on the shores of Lake Murray for 25 years and was able to fish nearly every day. She especially enjoyed camping the winters in Florida.
Survivors, in addition to her husband Jerry, include three sons, Roger West, Hanahan, SC, Robert “Bobby” (Barbara) West, Simpsonville, SC and William “Billy” (Sharon) West, Aiken, three step-sons, Christie West, Denmark, SC, Anthony “Tony” (Donna) Carnes, Aiken and Michael “Mike” Carnes, Aiken, two step-daughters, Elaine (Gary) Gunter, Decatur, GA and Kimiko “Kim” (Randy) Cuyler, Buchanan, MI, a brother, William “Bill” Sanders, Bamberg, SC and 21 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11:00 AM at Talatha Baptist Church with The Rev.’s David Lester and Lynn Peters officiating. Interment will follow in Southlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Monday at Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home, 715 East Pine Log Rd., Aiken, SC.
