AIKEN - Dr. George Rollin Caskey Jr., 84, beloved husband of June Thompson Caskey, died Thursday, May 17, 2012 at University Hospital.
A native of Chicago, Illinois, he was the only son of George R. Caskey Sr. and Margaret Forrest Caskey. Dr. Caskey graduated of the University of Illinois with a B.S. in Metallurgy. He earned his Master's and Ph.D. in Materials Science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He retired from DuPont, Savannah River Plant after over 40 years service.
Among the local organizations he belonged to were the Historic Aiken Foundation and the Camellia Club, serving as president for each. He also served as president of the Augusta Torch Club.
Survivors include his son, George R. Caskey III West Union (SC), and his daughter, Sarah (James) Caskey Smith, New Orleans (LA), as well as grandchildren, Sarah Emily Smith, and James E. Smith III. He is preceded in death by his parents.
Private funeral services will be held at the graveside in Historic Bethany Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. George K. Howle officiating. Ron Pieper will play the bagpipes at the graveside.
