AIKEN, SC -- Mildred Waldrop McNair died Thursday, October 18, at Mattie Hall Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late W. E. “Slim” McNair. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 20, 2007 at Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Southlawn Cemetery.
Born in Whitmire, SC, Mildred had made her home in Aiken for the past 45 years. She worked in Johnston, SC, in textiles and at J.B. White, in Aiken.
Survivors include three sisters Myrle Smith of Charleston, SC, Annette (B.J.) Jackson Union, SC, and June Smith, Warner Robbins, GA, one brother Ken (Dixie) Waldrop of Canton, IL. She was “special mother” to Joseph and Betty Puckett Verant of Warrenville, SC. She has six grandchildren Tiffany McNair, Brittany McNair, Lee McNair, all of Sumter, SC, Joseph (Beth) Verant, Columbia, SC, Frank (April) Verant, Warrenville, SC, Jason (Kristy) Verant, Birmingham, AL.
Other relatives include: Teresa (Allen) Mason, Columbia, SC, Kelvin Holland, Spartanburg, SC, Paul Wooten, Union, SC, Amber Jackson, Union, SC, Jody Smith, Seattle, WA, Kent, Bruce, Joel, and Patrick Waldrop, all of Canton, IL. Also nephews Truitt (Karen) McNair, Sumter, and Gibby (Ann) McNair, all of Sumter, SC
Mildred was a USO volunteer during the Vietnam was where she became a “second mom” to many servicemen and women. She wrote letters to them and their families and opened her home to them while they served their country. She was also very involved in the Nursing home ministries where she adopted many patients to visit and befriend.
She was very vocal in all issues she felt strongly about. She spent many hours writing letter to the editor, her congressmen, or even the President with her views. She took pride in keeping her friends and family updated on political issues.
She was a very giving person, and dedicated her life to helping others. She enjoyed life and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
