AIKEN, SC - HERBERT A. JONES, 78, widower of Rosemarie Sziede Jones, died Monday, September 10, 2012 at Select Specialty Hospital, Augusta, GA. A native of Pleasant View, KY, Mr. Jones was a son of the late Earl and Ida Thurman Jones. He proudly served his country in the United States Army, serving two tours in Korea and one tour in Vietnam, where he was awarded the Bronze Star. He rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant before retiring with 20 years of service. He was an avid supporter of the local VFW. Mr. Jones had lived in Aiken since 1972 and was a member of South Aiken Church of God where he was also a member of the Ambassadors Sunday School Class and the New Fire Senior Adult Group. Survivors include four daughters, Dianna J. (Ralph) Tornow, Aiken, Shirley J. (Bobby, Sr.) Boggs North Augusta, Susan J. (Scott) Tutak, Aiken, and Tanja J. Blackmon, Aiken; a son,. Michael Aaron Brand, Rockledge, FL; seven grandchildren, Sarah Soule, Rebekah Tornow, Stacey Chafin, Bobby "Chip" Boggs, Jr., Lauren Key, Hannah Key and Joshua Blackmon; three great-grandchildren, Nora Soule, Gracey Chafin and Riley Chafin; five sisters, Mickey (Ole) Olson, Aiken, Kay (Roy) Walker, Aiken, Molly (Murrel) Duncan, Couchton, Jeannie (Roy) Bagwell, Athens, GA and Polly (Paul) Townes, Aiken; a brother, Jack (Jane) Jones, Evans, GA and a sister-in-law, Beulah Jones, Knoxville, TN. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his brother, Sam Jones. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Wednesday at Shellhouse - Rivers Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 13, 2012 at 1:00 PM at South Aiken Church of God with The Rev. Bruce Fox officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens with Military Honors by the United States Army Honor Guard.
