AIKEN, SC - COL (Ret.) JOHN L. CANNON, US Army, 81, beloved husband of June Henry Cannon, died Friday, September 14, 2012 at Pepper Hill Nursing Center.
A native of Opelika, AL, John was a son of the late Garvin and Mamie Walker Cannon. He was a graduate of West Point Military Academy and earned a Masters degree in Civil Engineering from California Institute of Technology. He retired at the rank of Colonel after 30 years of service in the United States Army. Honors awarded during his career include: Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal (1 Oak Leaf cluster), National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal (1 Oak Leaf cluster), Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm (Unit) , Overseas Service bars (4), Legion of Merit (1 Oak Leaf cluster) and General Staff Identification Badge. He had lived in Aiken since 1990 and was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his wife June, include three children, Susan (Greg) Arthur, David (Linda) Cannon and Leigh Ann (Jimmy) Geter;, grandchildren, Michelle (Adam) Hezlep, Sarah, Nicholas, Walker, Austin; great-grandchildren, Addison, Asher; nephews, Mike Cannon, Pat Cannon, Bruce Cannon, Jr., and nieces, Lynne Cannon and Marcia Lertola.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his stepmother, Frances Cannon, and brothers Garvin Cannon, Jr., Bruce Cannon and Joe Cannon.
A memorial service will be held Sunday at 3:00 PM at St. John's United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends following the service.
The family wishes to thank Daybreak Adult Care Services, Dr. Leo Muniz, Regency Hospice and Pepper Hill Nursing Home. He received especially loving care from Emily, Mary, Erica, and Melissa.
