Shirley Lawrence Gartung Foster

AIKEN – Mrs. Shirley Lawrence Gartung Foster, 80, died Tuesday, November 6, 2007. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday at St. John’s United Methodist Church. The Rev. Dr. George K. Howle and the Rev. Terry Flemming will officiate. Interment will be private. Mrs. Foster was born in Wichita, KS, a daughter of the late Roy Eugene Lawrence and Jane Mildred Ramsey Lawrence Woodman Clark. She moved to Aiken in 1972, and was a retired teacher from the Aiken County School System, having taught at North Aiken Elementary for over 20 years. She was a member of the French Huegnot Society, the American Association of University Women, American Association of Business Women, Lifetime member of the National Education Association, Founder of the Aiken Miniature Society, flew biplanes in her early days and worked for Boeing Aircraft during World War II, was a member of the Alpha Delta Phi sorority, and was a Girl Scout leader. She was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church. Survivors include her son, Gerry (Janet) Gartung, Aiken; her daughter, Katherine Jane Gartung Roberts, Jacksonville, FL; and two grandchildren, Hilary E. Roberts and Zachary L.F. Roberts, Jacksonville, FL; a god-granddaughter, Abby Thompson-Caldwell, Greenville, SC; and special friends, Jack and Geneva Thompson, Aiken. In addition to her parents, her first husband Louis Gartung, and second husband, Richard Foster, preceded her in death.
