Jerry William Merritt

AIKEN – Mr. Jerry William Merritt, 86, died Tuesday, November 27, 2012. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday at Millbrook Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. Eddie Leopard officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Interment with military honors will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Greenville, SC. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Millbrook Whittlers, and the Jim Langford Sunday School Class. Mr. Merritt was born in Anderson, SC, a son of the late Jeremiah Thomas Merritt and Lilly Allison Merritt. He had been a resident of Aiken since 1952, was a graduate of Clemson University, and was a mechanical engineer for E.I. DuPont at the Savannah River Site. He was past president of SC Society Engineers, a member of Millbrook Baptist Church, and a member of the Millbrook Baptist Church Whittlers. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Gillespie Merritt; two daughters, Sandra (Dr. Byron) Elmore, Landrum, SC, Joan (George) Woodsby, Modoc, SC; six grandchildren, Ellen Elmore, M.D., Carl Elmore, Jr., JeriLynne Parrott, David Elmore, Margie Metzdorf, Jonathan M. Woodsby; nine great grandchildren; a sister, Virginia Hawkins, Columbia, SC. Mr. Merritt was preceded in death by his first wife, Inez Bridwell Merritt.
