Gertrude "Trudi" Garni Clontz

January 3, 1917 — January 31, 2008

AIKEN – Gertrude Garni Clontz, (“Trudi”, to her friends and family) was born in Basel, Switzerland on January 3, 1917. She moved with her family to Flushing, New York in 1921. She graduated from Flushing High School and then attended the Pratt Institute from which she graduated in 1937. After working in New York, Trudi moved to Panama (Canal Zone) where she worked as a civilian employee of the U.S. Army for three years and then transferred to the Department of Justice. Trudi met Vernon Leroy Clontz (“Lee”) in Panama and they married in 1964. When Lee retired in 1969, Trudi resigned her position as Administrative Assistant in the U.S. Attorneys Office and moved to Aiken, where she remained for the remainder of her life. Trudi was an active and dedicated member of the Aiken community. She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, the Town and Country Club, the Pairs and Spares Senior Group, NARFE, and worked for many years at ACTS. Trudi is survived by two nephews and their families, Ken Garni of Wellesley, MA and Don Garni of New Mexico and France. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 Am Saturday, February 9, 2008 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with the Reverend Gerald A. Reiter officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 902 Hitchcock Drive, Aiken, SC 29803 or a charity of choice.
