AIKEN, SC - HENRY GEORGE DeLORME, 93, beloved husband of Marion Cazin DeLorme, died Tuesday, January 1, 2013 at Aiken Regional Medical Centers.
A native of New York City, Mr. DeLorme was a son of the late George and Justina Venclik DeLorme. He was inducted into the U.S. Army in early 1941 and was assigned to the newly formed 47th Infantry Regiment of the 9th Infantry Division. After 18 months of training Henry was to partake in a special operation against the Axis. Boarding a troopship and departing the Eastern U.S., he with 240 other members of his outfit were transferred in mid-ocean to the USS Bernadou DD-153, a WWI class destroyer disguised as a French warship. In the darkness of November 8, 1942 the ship having slipped through the outer defenses and into the Harbor of Safi, French Morocco, was soon discovered as not French and the rouse was over. Raked by enemy gunfire from all directions, the ship was run aground where Henry and his comrades jumped to the beach to head off to silence the opposition. This was the beginning of the Invasion of North Africa. It was four months later, after marching across North Africa, when Henry's outfit was caught out in the open by a surprise attack by Rommel's Afrika Korps at El Quettar, Tunisia. Badly wounded by artillery shrapnel, Henry was transported back to the U.S. to recover and later discharged due to his wounds in 1944.
Mr. DeLorme retired from the U.S. Postal Service and had been a resident of Aiken since 1982. He was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church where he was a former deacon and served as a greeter. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans.
Henry is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marion. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, George DeLorme, Jr.
Funeral services will be held 9:45 AM Saturday, January 5, 2013 at Grace Presbyterian Church with The Reverend Greg Bowen officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens.
