NAN SHEA "MICKEY" PERKINS, 77, widow of Dr. William Clopton Perkins, Sr., died Friday, January 25, 2013 at Roper St. Francis Hospital, Charleston, SC.
A native of Lynchburg, VA, Mickey was a daughter of the late Michael Elword and Catherine Schanberger Shea. She attended Randolph Macon Women's College. She had lived in Aiken since 1960 before moving to Charleston, SC in 2011.
Mrs. Perkins was Headmistress of Aiken Day School and a teacher from 1983 to 1987. Mickey was a charter member of the Aiken Junior Women's Club and served as its first vice president. She also served in the Aiken Pan-Hellenic Club and Aiken Debutante Society. She was former president of the Aiken Civic Ballet as well as the American Diabetes Association. She was formerly active in the American Cancer Society helping facilitate the Breast Cancer Support Group as well as a hospice volunteer with Hitchcock Rehabilitation Center. In 1993 Mickey was named Woman of the Year by the Aiken Chamber of Commerce. She was also presented the American Cancer Society's Outstanding Service Award that same year. She was named Volunteer of the year in 2004 by Hitchcock Healthcare. Mickey was a founding board member of the Savannah River Cancer Foundation and was a communicant of St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church.
Survivors include five children, Michael Shea Perkins, Charleston, SC, Mary Lell Brown, Columbia, SC, Katherine P. Burgess, Charleston, SC, William C. Perkins, Jr., Jacksonville, FL and Anne P. Johnston, Fort Mill, SC; four grandchildren, Kathleen M. Perkins, Charleston, Anthony M. Perkins, Macon, GA, Thomas W. Johnston, Fort Mill, SC and Allison Shea Johnston, Ft. Mill, SC.
A Requiem Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at 10:00 AM at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Bethany Cemetery.
