Aiken, SC – Olga Elizabeth Korolevich Orishyn fell asleep in the Lord on March 3rd, 2013, at age 94. Olga was born in New York City, the oldest daughter of Safron and Elizabeth Kanarsky, who had emigrated from Belorussia, via Ellis Island, just prior to the First World War. Olga grew up in this Russian-speaking family on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, becoming fluent in English only after she entered the academic rigors of the 1930s New York Public School system, where she excelled.
Olga married the former semi-pro footballer and International Harvester manager Joseph Korolevich, and together they raised two daughters in the New York / New Jersey area. Olga worked as a secretary and office manager for several companies in that area, and with her quiet but determined nature pioneered aspects of women's liberation, and taught her daughters the skills needed by latch-key children, before society had even thought of the terms.
Early in their retirement years, Joseph passed away, and subsequently Olga remarried John Orishyn and moved to Florida. Upon John's death, she moved to Aiken. In her latter years, Olga gracefully took in stride all the challenges that God bestows upon those of advanced years, with always a kind word and a smile for all whom she encountered.
Olga is survived by her sister Nadia (Alex) Tereshko; by daughters Karen Goch and Lois (Michael) Gregory, both of Aiken; by grandsons Mark Goch, David Goch, and Alex Gregory; and by great-grandchildren Michael Mannik, Summer Goch, Elliot Goch, and Peter Goch. She was predeceased by her brother John (Laura) Kanarsky and her granddaughter Tania Gregory.
There will be a Panikhida memorial service on Friday, March 8th at 6:00 PM at Holy Apostles Orthodox Church, 724 Buff Street, West Columbia, SC 29169. The family will receive friends at that location from 5:30 to 7:00 PM. The Orthodox Christian funeral service will be at the same location on Saturday, March 9th at 2:00 PM, with internment to follow at Saints Mary & Martha Orthodox Monastery, 65 Spinner Lane, Wagener, SC 29164. The V. Rev. Thomas Moore of Holy Apostles Orthodox Church will officiate.
Throughout her long life, Olga derived much strength and hope from her Russian Orthodox Christian faith. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Holy Resurrection Orthodox Mission, PO Box 204706, Martinez, GA 30917. May her memory be eternal!
