Virginia Mullaney

AIKEN, SC- VIRGINIA CAROLINA WHARTON MULLANEY, 92, of Aiken, South Carolina, passed peacefully, Saturday, March 9, 2013. Born in Wilmington, Delaware, Virginia was the eldest child of Irwin Wharton and Madelyn Reed Wharton. She and her husband, Joseph Mullaney, raised their seven children in Chester, Pennsylvania, and then later moved to Lancashire, Delaware. Virginia was employed by John Wanamaker as manager of the beauty salon. She retired and moved to Dallas, Texas in 1975. She was not there long before becoming employed in the Beauty Salon at Nieman Marcus. She attempted to retire once more, this time to Tucson, Arizona. She found herself pursuing a new career in juvenile rehabilitation at Vision Quest. She traveled from the West to the East coast by Wagon Train. Virginia was also involved in the Sea Quest operation of Vision Quest. While living in Aiken, she was a member of Grace Church of Aiken and recently attended St. Mary's Help of Christians Catholic Church and had been a volunteer at Christ Central Mission. As a young mother, she played the piano and accordion in the spare time she had. In her retirement years, she enjoyed travel, and the family she traveled with, be it her sisters on an international cruise or hiking with her granddaughters at the Grand Canyon. Virginia delighted in giving her hand crocheted afghans to those she loved. Mrs. Mullaney is survived by six of her seven children; Virginia Reagan, Windsor, SC, Joseph (Ann) Mullaney, Milford, DE, Timothy Mullaney, Port Deposit, MD, Christopher (Karen) Mullaney, Bluffton, SC, Honora McLaughlin, Windsor, SC and Monica Alexander of Port Deposit, MD. Virginia was the grandmother of eighteen, the great-grandmother of seventeen and blessed with two great-great granddaughters. She is also survived by four sisters, Aileen Price, West Palm Beach, Fl, Nettie DuSold, Tucson, AZ, Grace Dix, Tucson, AZ and Roberta Burton Sticht, State College of PA; a brother, Robert Burton, Tucson, AZ; as well as many cousions, nieces, nephews and many, many friends. Virginia was preceded in death by her son, Terrance Mullaney and a brother, Irvin Wharton. Services will be held Sunday, March 17, 2013 at Grace Church of Aiken. The family will gather at 5:15 PM to receive friends at 6:00 PM to celebrate her life. A Requiem Mass will be held at St. Mary's Help of Christian Catholic Church at 11 AM Monday, March 18, 2013.
