Mary Louise Holmes

AIKEN, SC - Mary Louise Holmes, 90, of Aiken, S.C. passed away at Pepper Hill Nursing Home in Aiken, S.C. this past Friday, April 5, 2013. Mary Louise Holmes was born in Lumberton, N.C. on February 26, 1923 and she passed away on April 5, 2013. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Frank J. Holmes and her brother, A.J. Holmes of Lumberton. She is survived by her two sons, Robert F. (Anna Marie) Holmes, Aiken, James W. (Mary) Holmes, Atlanta; and 6 grandchildren, Robert and Andrew Holmes, Maggie (Jesse) Turner, Jamie, Sarah and Abbie Holmes. Mary Louise Holmes was a graduate of Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C. Later, she married Frank J. Holmes also a resident of Lumberton, N.C. Together they moved to Aiken in 1951 and established and operated Holmes’ Jewelers in downtown Aiken that served the Aiken community for over 35 years. She was an active and faithful member of St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church of Aiken. Throughout the years, she was an active member of the Aiken community and various civic organizations which helped grow the city and serve her residents. She loved golf and was a member of the Palmetto Golf Club and the Aiken Golf Club. She loved animals, especially dogs, and she often called them, “my four-legged friends.” Mary Louise was known by many and loved by all who knew her. She was a beloved and faithful wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She leaves behind a legacy of loving service to countless people. Her gracious and gentle spirit left indelible impressions upon all who knew her. Her life will remain a testimony to her love for Christ, her family and for all who had the privilege to know her. She will be deeply and profoundly missed. The family will receive friends and loved ones at the funeral home on Tuesday from 6 to 8 pm and on Wednesday from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The funeral will be held at St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church in Aiken on Wednesday at 1:00 pm. Inurnment will follow in the church cemetery.
