AIKEN, SC - Marguerite Newton Macklen, 96, passed away Tuesday, May 14, 2013 after an extended illness. She was a long-time resident of Aiken, SC where she was an Avon representative for 50 years and was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Aiken. She recently moved to Augusta, GA to be closer to family. She was born August 26, 1916 in Socastee, South Carolina on a tobacco farm. She was the oldest child of Charles Newton and Bessie Turbeville Newton. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph Betts Newton and Charles Gordon Newton, and three sisters, Bessie Delia Newton, Narcille Newton Vereen and Janice Newton Schwartz. She was preceded in death by her husband, Emerson Morris Macklen, an infant daughter, Patricia and a granddaughter, Nicole Marie Paul. Ms. Macklen is survived by her three children and their spouses, Emerson and Elizabeth Macklen, Evans, GA, James and Deidre Macklen, Irmo, SC and Anna Louise Paul, Lancaster, PA; six grandchildren; John Macklen, Steven Macklen, Mary Kathryn Macklen, George Holstead, Michelle Van Krieken and Anthony Paul and eleven great grandchildren plus two sisters, Pearl Newton Desilet and Betty Newton Hopkins. Visitation will be at Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home, 715 East Pine Log Rd., Aiken, South Carolina, Thursday, May 16, 2013 from 6 to 8 PM. Graveside service will be held Friday, May 17, 2013 at 2:00 PM at the Socastee United Methodist Church Cemetery, 5575 Dick Pond Rd., Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
