Mildred Frazier Spencer
Aiken, SC - Mrs. Mildred Frazier Spencer, 75, cherished wife for 51 years to Dr. Joseph DuPuy Spencer, passed away on Thursday, May 16, 2013.
Born on October 27, 1937, in Greenwood, Mississippi, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Valanding Frazier and Rachel Stancill Frazier.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Thomas Frazier Spencer, of Charlotte, NC and daughters, Catherine B. "Rette" Spencer, and Mary Spencer (John) Vaught, and grandchildren, Rachael Barnes, Pawley Cate Barnes, Lily Barnes and Will Vaught all of Aiken.
Mildred grew up in Greenwood, Miss and was a true Southern Lady. She moved to Virginia as a young woman and met the love of her life. They were married and a few years later moved to Aiken where they made their home for most of the next 45 years.
Mildred was very active in the community. She was a member of the Aiken Junior Woman's Club, The Sand River Woman's Club and Meals on Wheels. She was Co-chair of the March of Dimes Gourmet Gala in Richland, Washington when they lived there for a few years. She was very proud of the fact the she was "Ms. January" in the Steel Magnolias calendar that raised thousands of dollars for the Aiken Area Council on Aging.
Mildred's greatest accomplishment was her family. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was always there at every event in their lives as a proud wife, room Mom, Girl Scout Leader or what ever was needed. Her greatest joy in the later part of her life was being "Shug" to her four grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Shellhouse Rivers Funeral Home on Sunday, May 19, 2013 from 5-7pm. A funeral service celebrating her life will be held at St. Johns United Methodist Church in Aiken on Monday, May 20, 2013 at 2:00pm. Interment will follow in Bethany Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Spooky Weeks, John Epps, Doug McLean, Al Cothran, Milton Boswell, and Mitch Rivers. Honorary Pallbearers will be Pat Walke, Bob Cothran, Ed Farmer, Jim Mayenschein, Billy Howard, Marshall Cain, Marcus Huff, and Bob Newburn.
