Arthur Robert Balkind

AIKEN, SC- Memorial Services for Mr. Arthur Robert Balkind, 75, of Aiken, SC, who died Tuesday, July 2, 2013, will be conducted 11 AM Monday, July 8, 2013 in the Shellhouse Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Doctor Christopher Crotwell officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the historic Willcox Inn. Arthur was a native of Brooklyn, New York, having made Aiken his home for the past eight years. Prior to moving to Aiken, Arthur lived in Del Ray Beach, Fl, Boca Raton, Fl, Boynton Beach, Fl and then Mount Dora, Fl. He was the former owner and operator of Arthur’s 235 Salon for over 30 years. He opened his first business in Brooklyn Heights, NY and later moved it to Florida where he catered to the ladies of Del Ray Beach, Manalapan and Palm Beach, Florida. In Aiken, Arthur was a member of the Green Boundary Club, the Aiken County Historical Society, the Aiken Center for the Arts, the Aiken Steeplechase Association and the Aiken Symphony Guild where he was a subscriber to their annual concert series. His sister stated, “He will be remembered for his infectious laugh.” Arthur had an exuberant personality and always looked for the good in people. He had a strong faith, but didn’t believe in organized religion. Arthur is survived by his partner of eighteen years, Don Gordon; a sister, Dianne Balkind, Crystal River, Fl; cousins, Eileen and George Mahoney, Aiken, SC, Richard and Camille Gehnrich, Fl & Pa, Carol and Gary Balkind, Greensboro, NC, Arlene Shenker, Del Ray Beach, Fl & the Hamptons, NY; Bill and Judy Boyd, Highland Park, NY and his beloved Shih Tzu, Amy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney and Margaret Pisano Balkind.
