AIKEN - Mrs. Mildred Coker Whitaker, 89, passed away on Monday, August 12, 2013.
Born in Columbia, Mildred was the daughter of Archie O. and Mamie Cameron Coker. She attended Dreher High School and Drahn Business School. She moved to Aiken in 1957 and worked for E. I. DuPont at the Savannah River Site. Later, she worked at University of South Carolina Aiken in the Finance Department. Upon moving to Aiken in 1957, she joined St. John’s United Methodist Church and was a faithful member ever since. She attended the Fellowship Sunday School Class and was a member of Circle 3. She was also a member of Chapter P of Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO). Mrs. Whitaker was the epitome of Southern grace and charm, kind and loving to people she met.
She is survived by her sister Frances Sherwood and her sister-in-law Joanne Coker. She is also survived by her daughter Susan (Kirk) Lawson, son Stephen (Brenda) Whitaker; grandchildren Josh (Cristina) Lawson, Bryce Lawson and his fiancée Rachel De Foor, Stephen Whitaker, Jeremy Whitaker, Tiffany Whitaker, and Keith Whitaker; and great-grandchildren Keegan and Kowen Lawson and Payton and Zoe Whitaker.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Archie Coker, her brother-in-law Clarence Sherwood, and her sister and brother-in-law Vivian and Al Theurer.
The family would like to thank the staff at Shadow Oaks for the care they showed Mrs. Whitaker during her two and a half years there along with the staff of Pepper Hill for the care they provided to Mrs. Whitaker during her stay at Pepper Hill.
Funeral services will be held at St. John’s United Methodist Church on Thursday, August 15 at 2:00 PM with the Rev. Dr. George K. Howle and the Rev. Dr. Ray Litts officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be St John’s Fellowship Class and Chapter P of PEO. Interment will be private at Historic Bethany Cemetery.
