Colin Covington

AIKEN, S.C. - Colin Weatherly Covington, age 62, joined the Heavenly Choir on Saturday, September 7, 2013, following a brief illness. Colin was the loving and beloved husband of Jean Hunter Covington, his wife of 31 years, and father of their son, Hunter Weatherly Covington, age 20. Colin was born in Norway, S.C., a son of the late George M. “Buck” and Inez “Nez” Dantzler Covington. In addition to his wife and son of the home, he is survived by his five siblings, George (Mary Helen) Covington of Piedmont, Danny (Judy) Covington of Norway, Michael (Angela) Covington of Columbia, Cairen (Chuck) Withington of Central, and Sallie (Wayne) Chester of Leesville; as well as his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Glenn and Betty Hunter, of Orangeburg; sister-in-law Amy (Paul) Wanninger of North Augusta; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and cherished friends. Colin graduated from Clemson University in 1973, where he became a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. He was dedicated to lifelong learning, and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts and a Master’s Degree in Environmental Engineering. He was employed as Director of Business Development with VLS Recovery Services, LLC, and spent his career focused on developing innovative and sustainable solutions for America’s waste management and energy needs. Prior to his employment with VLS, Colin was the General Manager for Three Rivers Solid Waste Authority. He led the effort with the U.S. Department of Energy and local officials to create this energy-producing waste disposal and recovery facility located in New Ellenton, S.C., to serve the long-term needs of nine western S.C. counties and others. He was a member of several professional organizations and served on the Steering Committee for the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) Applied Research Foundation. He served on the S.C. DHEC Waste Tire Committee and was an advisor on several committees for regulation development. He also served on the S.C. Chamber of Commerce Environmental Committee. Colin balanced his career with his love of God and family, as well as his love for music, comedy, golf, reading, and travel. Most recently, he shared his vocal and keyboard skills with the Palmetto Groove Band and the Water to Wine Band at First Presbyterian Church where he also served as deacon, elder, and Sunday School teacher. A celebration of his life will take place Sunday, September 15, 2013, at 3 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church, Aiken, S.C. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Palmetto Groove Band, the Water to Wine Band, the Lookout Mountain Band, and brothers of Sigma Nu.
