AIKEN - Mr. Rayford Garland Kimbrell (CPO, US Navy Ret.), 91, died Saturday, October 19, 2013.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM in Bethany Cemetery on October 22, 2013 with the Reverend Dr. Chris Masters officiating. Full military honors will follow.
A six year resident of Aiken, Mr. Kimbrell was born in Berry AL, a son of the late Tillman and Minnie Kimbrell. He had retired from the US Navy after serving 21 years. While serving in the Navy, he was aboard the USS Kearney, a vessel that was torpedoed off the coast of Iceland at the beginning of World War II. He also served aboard the USS Wisconsin during the invasion of North Africa.
After his service in the Navy, Mr. Kimbrell worked for Swift and Company Meat Packers in Rochelle, IL for 20 years. He also owned and operated a small engine repair shop in Rochelle for 20 years after retiring from Swift and Co. He was a lifetime member and served on the Honor Guard of the Floyd J. Tilton, VFW Post #3878, in Rochelle.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Ethel Waters Kimbrell; a daughter, Pamela Kimbrell Winebaugh, Rochelle, IL; a son, Phil (Linda) Kimbrell, Aiken; four grandchildren, Alan (Kristy) Kimbrell, Katie (Jason) Sauter, Scott Winebaugh; four great grandchildren, Olivia, Kamdon, Taylor and Kennedi; and a brother, William (Lois) Kimbrell, Tuscaloosa, AL.
