AIKEN - Mrs. Doris Edna Cowfer, 76, passed away Wednesday, October 30th at University Hospital in Augusta, GA.
A celebration of her life, officiated by Reverend Grant B. Wiseman, will take place Sunday, November 10th at 1:30 PM at St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church in Aiken, SC. Mrs. Cowfer’s many friends are encouraged to attend the service as well as the reception that will follow it.
Born in Snow Shoe, PA, Mrs. Cowfer was the daughter of late Willard and Edna Schultz. She is survived by her husband C. David Cowfer of Aiken, her son David B. Cowfer and his wife Patricia of Jacksonville, FL and her daughter Karen Walp of Aiken as well as grandchildren Brittany and Andrew Cowfer and Douglas, Jason (wife Mallory) and Kristin Walp. She was preceded in death by her parents as well as her brothers Willard and Donald Schultz. Other survivors who were very close to her include nieces Pamela Bird and Denise Snook of Bellefonte, PA, Linda Schmidt and Laura Fink of Buffalo, NY, Ron Long of Pottstown, PA, Charles Cowfer of Pennsdale, PA, sister-in-laws and brother in-laws Virginia and Robert Kaminsky of Hazleton, PA, Flossie and Robert Mader of Quakertown, PA, Betty and Allan Lunger of North Bend, PA and SueAnn and Randall Lane of Staunton, VA.
Mrs. Cowfer was a business graduate of Morris College in New Jersey and also studied at the University of Connecticut. She worked for many years as a tax preparer and office manager for H&R Block in the Aiken / Augusta area. She served as the treasurer for the Women of Woodside’s Investment Club and volunteered at Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed gardening, playing bridge and spending time with her grandchildren.
In 2006, she suffered a spinal cord injury that confined her to a wheelchair for the remainder of her life, but her spirit never wavered and she served as an inspiration to many for her grace and courage in overcoming her disability to lead an active life.
An additional memorial service for Mrs. Cowfer will take place in State College, PA later this year and interment will take place at Centre County Memorial Park near State College.
