AIKEN – Mrs. Ann Lomax Coward, 90, passed away Tuesday, December 10, 2013.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday at First Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. Fred W. Andrea III officiating. Interment will be held privately in the Millbrook Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Coward was born on August 13, 1923, in Greenwood, SC, to the late William Arnold and Annie Poole Lomax. She attended Greenwood schools and graduated from Converse College in 1944. She had been a resident of Aiken since 1945. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Aiken, where she was proud to be a part of the Truth Seekers Sunday School class for some 35 years. She was a charter member of The Cotillion of Aiken, a Board member of Friends of Hopelands, a volunteer at the Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame, and a member of the Aiken Junior Student Club, the Aiken Steeplechase Association, the former Green Gardeners Club, and numerous bridge groups, supper clubs, and golf foursomes.
She is survived by her sons, Ira E. “Bud” (Bonnie) Coward, Aiken; William L. Coward (Michael L. Crouch), Columbia; Edgar A. (Robin) Coward, Aiken; one grandchild, Caroline C. (Charles) McIntosh, Charleston; one step-grandchild, Kristopher Cloud; and one great grandchild, Ann Ellis McIntosh, Charleston. She is also survived by many, many friends in the Aiken community and beyond whose companionship provided her great delight, and who were in turn touched by her heart of gold, her overwhelming generosity, and her pimento cheese sandwiches.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, William Allan Coward, who passed away on October 8, 1979.
Words cannot express this family’s gratitude to the nurses and staff at Shadow Oaks Assisted Living for their sincere kindness and care for our dear Ann-ee during her years there, and especially in her final days. We are likewise grateful to Dr. David Keisler and to Regency Hospice for their care and compassion as we prepared to send Mother off on her journey heavenward.
