Herbert L. Davis

AIKEN, SC - Herbert Lee Davis, III, of Aiken, SC passed away on December 21, 2013, the Winter Solstice. He was born to the late Herbert Lee Davis, Jr. and Mary Frances Farmer in Wilmington, NC on July 11, 1942. Lee is survived by his wife and best friend Barbara Strickland Davis, sister Alice Davis Anderson of Wilmington, daughter Hilary Davis Case (married to James Case) of Jacksonville, FL and their children Ben and Anne, & son Bert Davis (married to Nicole Davis) of Aiken, SC and their daughter Kylee. He is predeceased by sister Mary Farmer Davis. Lee and Barbara were married on December 30, 1967. Their loving marriage of 46 years is inspiration for their children. "Bopa," as he is affectionately known by his grandchildren, will be dearly missed. He was the consummate gentleman & family man - always putting family first. He loved family vacations to the beach, where he shared his love of surf fishing. His greatest joy was being with his family making memories - and remembering special times. He graduated from New Hanover High School in 1960, UNCW (BS Chemistry and BS Biology) & N.C. State University (MS Zoology '68, PhD Marine Biology '71). Throughout his life, he shared his passion for the outdoors. His interests and work always involved appreciating & protecting our environment. He retired from US Dept of Energy at the Savannah River Site in Aiken, SC in 2011, where he worked as an environmental scientist protecting our air and water quality. Lee has many friends with whom he worked, hunted, golfed, and fished... and many stories he loved sharing about growing up in Wilmington, the Atlantic Coastline Railroad, being an acolyte at St. James Episcopal Church, a member of Carolina Yacht Club, and a Wrightsville Beach Lifeguard. In honor of Lee's love of storytelling, and in lieu of flowers, the family requests letters sharing your memories mailed to 3089 Champagne Drive, Aiken, SC 29803. These memories will be treasured and shared for years. A visitation will be held Thursday, December 26 at Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home (East Pine Log Rd) in Aiken from 7-8pm.
