April 3, 1928 — June 16, 2008

AIKEN, SC – MARTHA ANN MORRIS BURCKHALTER, 80, widow of Henry Nelson Burckhalter, died Monday, June 16, 2008 at her residence. A native of Centenary, SC, Mrs. Burckhalter was a daughter of the late Jerome and Florence Wilburn Morris. She lived most of her life in Aiken and was a graduate of Aiken High School. She worked as a receptionist for Dr. Roundtree for many years and also worked as a bookkeeper for several other businesses in Aiken. Mrs. Burckhalter was a member of Memorial Baptist Church. She and her late husband were co-founders of the Aiken Wood Carvers Club. She was an artist and won many awards for her artistry in china painting and wood carving. Survivors include her daughter, Janet Burckhalter of Aiken, three sisters, Florence (Dr. Norman) Pursley, Lincolnton, GA, Mary Alice Lockhart, Aiken, Risa (Kenny) Newsome, Lincolnton, GA, three brothers, Jerome Morris, Jr., Aiken, Wilburn (Becky) Morris, Aiken and Dr. Bill (Glenda) Morris, Spartanburg, SC, a granddaughter, Laurie (Lee) Moore, Neptune Beach, FL, four grandchildren, Christopher, Michael, Rebekah and Sydney Moore, and three sisters-in-law, Eloise Burckhalter, Elizabeth Walton and Minnie McKenna, all of Aiken. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Diane Burckhalter McFarland. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 19, 2008 at 11:00 AM in the chapel of Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home, 715 East Pine Log Rd., Aiken, SC, with Rev. Ed Newsome and Frank Allen Walton officiating. Interment will follow in Aiken Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Wednesday at the residence and also from 10 to 11 AM Thursday at the funeral home.
