Mae Allen Croft

AIKEN – Mrs. Mae Allen Croft, 86, was called home, Friday, January 10, 2014. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at 2:00 PM at St. John’s United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. George K. Howle and the Rev. Dr. Ray Litts officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in Ward Hall. Interment will then follow in Sunset Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Wayne Heidtman, Jeffery Shurtleff, Jonathan Shurtleff, Terry Gaskins, Neil Cobb and Vernon Derrick. Honorary Pallbearers will be St. John’s United Methodist Church Fellowship Sunday School Class. Born in Surry County, NC to the late Carrie D. Allen and John A. Allen. Mae loved her church, having been a member for over fifty years. She served on many commissions. She was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class and Circle 7. Mae served on the advisor board for the Order of Rainbow for Girls. In 1973, she received the Grand Cross of Color for her work with the Rainbow Girls. She loved the order of Eastern Star and served as the leading officer on four different occasions. She also served on many state positions. Mae served Grand Representative of Nevada in 1996-1997. She went to Nevada to represent South Carolina. This was next to her church. She retired as office administrator of the District office of Life Insurance Company of Georgia in Aiken after 38 years. She loved basketball and made the star team of Surry County, NC when in high school, receiving an athletic award when she graduated. She loved working in her vegetable and flower garden and really loved to fish. She is survived by her husband, Walter P. Croft; a daughter, Judy Croft (Jeff) Shurtleff, Augusta, GA; a son, Walter Allen (Jannell) Croft, Huber Heights, OH; five grandchildren, Britt Shurtleff, Jeffery Shurtleff, Jonathan Shurtleff, Walter Paul (Emily) Croft, Adele Mae (Kermit) Hunt; five great grandchildren, Nathan Hunt, Hailey Hunt, Andrew Hunt, Sienna Croft, Jessie Croft; four sisters, Maude Creed, Pilot Mountain, NC, Blanche Falkenberry, Winston Salem, NC, Lucy Still, Charlotte, NC, Nancy Hunt, Pinnacle, NC; five brothers, Clarence Allen, Pinnacle, NC, Frank Allen, Charlotte, NC, Fred Allen, Gastonia, NC, Roy Allen, High Point, NC and Lonnie Allen of Pinnacle, NC. Mae was preceded in death by four brothers, James Allen, Paul Allen, Henry Allen and Luke Allen.
