AIKEN - Nell Shepherd Johnson of Saluda, SC passed away on Sunday, January 19, 2014 at Trinity on Laurens Lutheran Home in Aiken, SC, where she had been a resident for the last eight years. Nell was born in West Columbia on November 12, 1917. She was the daughter of the Reverend Arthur and Mary Reynolds Shepherd. Nell was married to the late Willie E. Johnson. After the war and Willie’s release from a prisoner of war camp, the couple lived in the home they built on Eutaw Street in Saluda, SC, raising three children: Mary Jo Epps (John) and Steve Johnson (Patty), and daughter, Jane, who predeceased her parents. Nell has two grandchildren, Marian Dean (Ben) of Aiken and Jack Epps (Cathy) of Lexington and four great grandchildren: Will Dean, Mary Caroline Dean, Jake Epps, and Anne Grace Epps. Nell was the third child of eleven brothers and sisters all of which have predeceased her except her sister, Daphne Rushe (George) of Chapin, SC. Nell was devoted to many organizations and clubs in Saluda and especially her church, Red Bank Baptist Church, where she was a member for over 60 years. She was an avid bridge player and treasured her time spent with friends. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at the Mausoleum Chapel at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Columbia, SC, on Wednesday, January 22, at 11:00 AM. A private burial will be held prior to the service. The family will receive friends in the Chapel following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Red Bank Baptist Church, 309 E. Church St., Saluda, SC 29138, or a charity of one’s choice.
