AIKEN – Mr. Gerald Edward Devitt, 87, passed away Thursday, February 20, 2014.
The family will receive friends beginning at 12:00 PM Monday, and a memorial service will follow at 1:00 PM in the funeral home chapel with the Reverend Art Dalupang officiating. Military Service in the United States Navy will be acknowledged following the service. Interment will be held privately.
Mr. Devitt was born in Jersey City, NJ, a son of the late Edward and Claire Devitt. He served in the US Navy during WWII as a signalman aboard the U.S.S. Walsh. Mr. Devitt, a lifelong safety professional, was a retired Chief Industrial Hygienist with Owens Corning Fiberglas. He and his wife Edna moved from their home in Livonia, MI to Aiken in 1987. Mr. Devitt was a member of Palmetto Golf Club, the American Industrial Hygiene Association, the Green Boundary Club, and St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church. In addition to golf, he loved to fly his own aircraft, travel extensively, read and play croquet.
He is survived by his two daughters, Lauri (William) Wingle, Kalamazoo, MI, Janet (Jerry) Eschman, Knoxville, TN; a son, Glen (Anne) Devitt, Marion, IN; eight grandchildren, Jordan Eschman, Jentry Eschman, Alexander McLarnon, Andrew McLarnon, Rebecca Lukasik, Jason Devitt, Michael Devitt, Tracy Devitt; two great grandchildren, Jack William Lukasik and Nathan Charles Lukasik.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Free Devitt, and a daughter, Susan Devitt.
