Hazel Yvonne Courtney

AIKEN, SC – HAZEL YVONNE COURTNEY, 77, beloved wife of William O’Neil Courtney, died Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at Aiken Regional Medical Centers. A native of Bishop, TX, Mrs. Courtney was a daughter of the late Lee Hank and Luceal Johnson McTaggart. She lived most of her life in Aiken. Mrs. Courtney worked as a secretary for Jackson Transfer and Storage and the Aiken Barnwell Mental Health Center before entering USC Aiken at age 50. She earned her degree in nursing and went to work as a registered nurse at Aiken Regional Medical Centers and then DHEC Home Health Care. Mrs. Courtney was a lifelong member of Millbrook Baptist Church where she was active in the Sunshine Ladies and the Merry Hearts Sunday School Class. Survivors in addition to her husband of 58 years, William O’Neil, include three children, William “Bill” Belton O’Neil (Kathy) Courtney, Leesville, SC, Melanie Courtney (Larry) Boyd, Aiken, Dwayne D. (Page) Courtney, Aiken; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four sisters, Anne (Dick) Workman, Lexington, SC, Faye (Jack) Philie, Fort Myers, FL, Jan Canady, Aiken, Judy (Albert) Hood, Dublin, GA; two brothers, Carey (Rachel) McTaggart, Seneca, SC, George (Lana) McTaggart, West Columbia, SC. She was preceded in death by a grandson, William Belton O’Neil Courtney III and a great-grandson, Dylan Lee Fookes. The family will receive friends Saturday from 11 AM until 1 PM at Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 1:00 PM with The Reverend Chris Masters officiating. Interment will be in Bethany Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Greg McTaggart, Bob Workman, Brad Workman, Donnie Canady, Michael McTaggart and Jason Courtney.
