AIKEN - Patricia (Pat) Miller passed away peacefully at her Aiken home on March 18th, 2014 after a valiant struggle with cancer.
Born Patricia Ann Hoskins on July 17, 1950, Pat was the daughter of Alfred Conrad Hoskins and Margaret Naomi Freels, and grew up in the countryside of East Tennessee as the sister of two brothers, Britt and Walter. She attended Tennessee Tech University, and it was while working as a summer waitress in Ocean City, Maryland that she met the love of her life, Mark Reid Miller. They married in 1975, and four years later she gave birth to their daughter Stacy Marie Miller. The family lived in Boyds, Maryland until 2006.
Pat’s career spanned many sectors, and included 17 years with Delta Airlines, which she credited for her impressive memorization of every domestic airport code. In retirement, she and Mark moved to Aiken, SC, and traveled often-- through Europe and Central America.
Pat didn’t waste time with anything less than “hard” sudoku puzzles, and could calculate tips and split checks in her head faster than most people could unwrap an after-dinner mint. She was well known for her perfect pound cakes, fearless pruning skills, and winning smile, which she offered generously to everyone she met, even when instructing someone irksome to “kiss her grits.”
In Aiken, Pat was an active volunteer leader of Aiken Habitat for Humanity Women Build, in which she remained involved until the month prior to her death.
Pat was survived by her husband Mark as well as her daughter Stacy, son-in-law Joe, grandson Fionn Conrad, and many nephews and nieces, on whom she showered love and devotion daily.
A memorial service will be held at SHELLHOUSE FUNERAL HOME, INC., 924 HAYNE AVE., AIKEN, SC on Thursday, March 27th at 3 pm with the Rev. Myron Ivey officating, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
