Betty McLure Toole

AIKEN, S.C. - Mrs. Betty McLure Toole, 88, died on Thursday, May 15, 2014. She was born on November 11, 1925, in Bishopville, South Carolina, to Dr. Harvey McNair McLure and Celeste Webber McLure. She had been a resident of Aiken since the early 1950s having moved here to be near her future husband, Frampton Wyman Toole, Jr. She is survived by her son, Frampton Wyman Toole, III, of Aiken, South Carolina, her daughter, Harriet Celeste Toole, of Atlanta, Georgia, her grandson, Frampton Wyman Toole, IV, of Aiken, South Carolina, and her sister, Jane McLure Temple, of Columbia, South Carolina. She was predeceased by her husband and her parents. She lived in a number of places during her childhood to include her birthplace of Bishopville, South Carolina, as well as Muskogee, Oklahoma, Huntington, West Virginia, Hampton, Virginia, Lake City, Florida, and Jenkins, Kentucky, as a result of her father’s service as a United States Veterans Administration physician. She was a graduate of the University of South Carolina with a bachelor’s degree in merchandising. She was actively involved in the Aiken community including serving as a volunteer with the Aiken County Hospital Auxiliary and as a docent at the Aiken County Historical Museum for many years. She also was an avid supporter of USC-Aiken and its scholarship endeavors. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Aiken and the Aiken Outing Club. Her hobbies included reading, playing bridge, and following the University of South Carolina athletic teams. A graveside service will be held on Sunday, May 18, 2014, at 3:00 p.m., at historic Bethany Cemetery in Aiken, with the Rev. Brian Coulter officiating. A reception for family, friends and those that knew her will be held immediately after the service at Newberry Hall from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Betty M. Toole History Scholarship Endowment at USC-Aiken or to a charity of choice.
