AIKEN, SC - Benjamin (Ben) Bancroft of Aiken died Saturday, July 5, 2014. A Memorial Service celebrating his life will be held at 4pm Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at Shellhouse Rivers Funeral Home, 715 East Pine Log Road, Aiken, SC with Rev. Davis Barton officiating. Interment will be private. Visitation with family will be one hour before the service. Ben was the son of the late John Nields and Elizabeth Gray Bancroft. He is survived by his brother John Bancroft (Beth), Aiken. He is also survived by Cousins Bill Bancroft and Alice Bancroft Fjelstul (Dean); nieces Julianne Bancroft Cheek, Lauren Howard, and Rachel Hanisee and nephew Nash Johnston. Ben was predeceased by his wife Linda Golden Bancroft and his identical twin brother Edward (Ned). He was born on June 21, 1946 in Bryn Mawr, PA and grew up in Aiken. He was a graduate of Aiken High School and the University Of Georgia School Of Journalism. Ben worked in the circulation department of The Augusta Chronicle until his retirement. He was a US Army veteran who served one tour of duty in Vietnam. Crossword puzzles and golf were two of his favorite pastimes. However, nothing surpassed his love of life and most especially his love for family and those whose friendships made him feel so especially honored. These included his golfing friends, as well as, classmates and others who maintained their close relationship with him throughout his life. Ben was blessed to have Christian friends who ministered to him as he dealt with his recent illness. It was during this time that Ben came to know the love of Jesus. He accepted Christ as his Savior and was baptized three days before his death. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Savannah River Cancer Foundation, PO Box 3694, Aiken, SC 29802.
