AIKEN, SC- CLAYTON ELTON SMITH, JR., 74, died Friday, August 1, 2014 at University Hospital, Augusta, GA. Mr. Smith was born in Rossville, Georgia and grew up in Huntsville, Alabama and moved to South Carolina in 1974, and has resided in Aiken since 1990. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for seven years. Mr. Smith had been involved in Computer Science since 1965. He retired from Westinghouse at SRS as a Computer System Analyst. In his spare time, he loved to travel and he volunteered for Habitat for Humanity. He was a Scout Leader for Troop 310, Lexington, SC and helped with the Wheelchair ramp team. He was also a member of St. John's United Methodist Church where he was part of the "Monday Crew." He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, Clayton E. Smith, Sr. and Tommie Winifred McCall Smith, and a sister, Winifred Smith Vandiver. Survivors include his wife, Brenda Wise Smith, of Aiken; a daughter, Lorrie Smith DuBose (Steve), West Columbia, SC; a son, Clayton "Clay" Smith, III (Erika) , Aiken, SC; four grandchildren, Jenna DuBose Lake (Carter), Jacob DuBose, Danielle Smith, Clayton Smith; a brother, Richard P. Smith, Huntsville, AL, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held this Sunday afternoon at 3 PM at St. John's United Methodist Church. The Reverend Doctors Tim McClendon and Ray Litts officiating. Pallbearers will be Vandy Vandiver, Clay Vandiver, Michael Wise, Steve DuBose, Clayton Smith, and Jacob DuBose. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Asbury Sunday School Class. Private interment in St. John's Columbarium at a later date. The family will receive friends following the service in Ward Hall.
